Hannay Reels Hose Safety Awareness Week

Not just one week, but all year long.

Posted on 08/28/2025

A compilation of safe and unsafe hose storage, demonstrating why hose reels are essential for worker safety.

Why Hose Reels Are Essential for Hose Safety

In many industries and households, hoses play a crucial role—from watering gardens to powering pneumatic tools, cleaning machinery, or handling hazardous fluids. However, improper storage and handling of hoses can lead to wear and tear, safety hazards, and reduced efficiency. That’s where hose reels come in.

These simple yet powerful devices offer several key safety benefits that make them essential for anyone regularly working with hoses.

1. Reduce Tripping Hazards

Loose hoses lying around on the ground are a major cause of slips, trips, and falls—especially in busy work environments like workshops, factories, or construction sites. Hose reels keep hoses neatly wound and off the floor, significantly reducing the risk of accidents.

2. Prevent Hose Damage

When hoses are left coiled haphazardly or dragged across rough surfaces, they are more likely to suffer abrasions, punctures, or kinks. These issues can compromise the integrity of the hose, leading to leaks, reduced pressure, or even bursts. A hose reel allows for controlled winding and unwinding, which protects the hose from physical damage and extends its lifespan.

3. Improve Storage and Organization

Hose reels provide a dedicated space for hose storage, keeping workspaces organized and clutter-free. This not only improves safety but also enhances productivity. Workers don’t have to spend time untangling or locating hoses, making operations smoother and faster.

4. Control Hose Retraction

Many hose reels are equipped with controlled retraction features such as spring rewind mechanisms or powered rewind motors which help manage the retraction process. However, it’s still the operator’s responsibility to use them safely and correctly.

  • Spring rewind reels: Never allow the hose to snap back on its own. Always walk the hose back to the reel.

  • Power rewind reels: Guide the hose evenly as it rewinds to ensure neat, uniform storage.

Taking just a couple of extra minutes to follow these steps helps protect you and keeps your hose properly stored for longer service life.

5. Protect Against Environmental Damage

In outdoor environments, hoses are exposed to UV rays, extreme temperatures, chemicals, and moisture—all of which can degrade hose materials over time. Hose reels, especially enclosed ones, offer a layer of protection from the elements, helping maintain the hose's integrity and safety for longer periods.

6. Minimize Manual Handling Injuries

Dragging and lifting heavy hoses can strain muscles and joints, especially if done repeatedly. Hose reels reduce the amount of manual handling required, as many models feature crank handles, spring-driven mechanisms, or even motorized retraction. This can help reduce fatigue and repetitive strain injuries.

7. Enhance Chemical Safety

In environments where hoses carry flammable liquids, chemicals, or corrosive materials, hose reels add a layer of safety by ensuring the hose is always in good condition and ready to deploy in a safe manner.

Hose reels are more than simple storage tools. They are safety devices that protect equipment, workspaces, and people. Whether in a residential garden or an industrial setting, investing in a hose reel is a smart, practical decision that promotes safer hose usage, reduces maintenance costs, and improves overall efficiency.
