Keeping Your Hannay Work Truck Reel Going

Posted on 03/14/2024

One less thing to worry about. Durable work truck wheels

Work truck reels make life easier for operators on the go. Whether you’re delivering fuel or installing electric cable for a jobsite, you need your work truck reel to be in peak condition to reduce downtime and avoid accidents.

Performing routine maintenance on your work truck reels is key to keeping the equipment in top working order. Hannay reels rarely require repair, but when they do, bolted-on components and conveniently located swivel joints make service quick and hassle-free.

Here are some helpful maintenance guidelines to follow:

  • Inspect your work truck reel once a month—A work truck reel might not be overly complicated, but there are many crucial parts. Examine the reel frames, discs, fluid paths, motors, and swivel joints at least once a month to ensure there is no damage and that each part is in good condition.
  • Tightness leads to safety—If any components appear to be loose upon inspection, make sure they’re tightened and mechanically sound. When applicable, check electrical connections on reel motors and on cable reel collector assemblies.
  • Rewind your reel the correct way—With a spring rewind reel, patience is paramount. The mechanism is designed to make retracting hose or cable easier, but it’s important not to allow the reel to snap back on its own. Walk the hose or cable back to your work truck when rewinding. The force of the hose or cable snapping back on the reel can damage the spring rewind canister or ratchet assembly unit and can also cause personal injury to you or your coworkers.
  • Specific tip for Arc Welding Reels—Locate the grease zerk fitting on the side of one of the reel discs. With a hand-operated grease gun, apply a couple pumps of grease. Hannay Reels recommends Sanchem NO-OX-ID conductive grease compound or equivalent, which can be found at your local welding supplies distributor.
