The Right Reel for a Tough Job

Hannay reels increase safety and efficiency while cutting concrete

Metro Koring & Supply Inc. is a family owned full-service concrete cutting company specializing in core drilling and Kor-n-seal^® boot installation. Metro Koring provides these important processes to a variety of locations including water treatment and industrial plants, hotels, hospitals, schools, airports, and military bases. They provide concrete cutting, demolition, and other critical services to general contractors in Georgia.

Metro Koring is a self-described “tough company” and they need tough equipment to match. “Cutting concrete can create a pretty rough working environment. We need equipment we can rely on to stand up to factors like dust and dirt,” said Chase King, Metro Koring shop manager. “We’ve been using Hannay Reels for 15 years and they really deliver when it comes to strength and performance. Our oldest reel was built back in 2006 and it still works today.”

Metro Koring has a total of 12 Hannay reels, fitted to their variety of eight work trucks. “Hannay has been great to work with. We were able to give them an idea of what we needed and they were able to develop a reel specifically for each of our applications,” King noted.

One of their largest reels, a Hannay 7000 Series hydraulic hose reel, used to help power their handsaws, is designed to be five times the size of their average reels. “Having larger reels gives us the extra footage we need to keep cutting without having to move our truck closer to the work area. This convenience saves us a ton of time on the job,” explained King. “Another huge time-saver is the power rewind feature on the reel. It makes packing up much easier.”

While cutting concrete, it is very important to have a dust control method in place. Metro Koring uses the Hannay 1500 Series reels for this purpose. The hose provides water to the saw so it can bind to the dust, reducing the amount of airborne silica dust created while cutting. This keeps the workers safe and healthy.

Each Metro Koring truck is uniquely built to optimize performance for the specific application it will be used for. The ability to customize these reels was very important to the efficiency of the vehicles. “Any special reel we may need, you guys are able to help us implement our idea to make it work,” said King.
