Changing a Hannay Spring Motor (Tech Document HTD-9808)

IMPORTANT: Make sure all tension from the spring has been removed before doing Step 1. Injury can occur if this is not done.

  1. Remove Dust Cap from Spring (see Figure 1). Loosen all bolts that hold the spring to the rest of the reel. Depending on the exact model you have, this may be up to 4 bolts.

    Figure 1
  2. Carefully remove the spring from the reel by pulling it towards your body (see Figure 2). With larger springs, it would be best to use a second person to assist in the removal process.
    Figure 2

  3. If you have an “N-series” Hannay spring reel, your reel should now look similar to Figure 3. If you have a regular Hannay spring reel, it will look a little different, but you will in either case see an arbor mounted directly on the center shaft of the reel.
    Figure 3
  4. Position the new spring onto the reel, making sure to engage the hooked end of the spring onto one of the 3 arbor lobes (see Figure 4). Again, you may wish to have a second person assist in this task.

  5. Now simply re-tighten any bolts and spacers that were removed in step 1. You will then want to re-tension the reel. Refer to Hannay form H-9803-SR should you have any questions on setting spring tension.
